This work-in-progress is a web adaptation of the avatar component from previous projects (Live at the Kitchen, Four Movements, etc.).
Through the site, the visitor can control this instrumentalist avatar as a unique banjo performer. The avatar responsd to both a normal computer keyboard as well as a velocity-sensitive MIDI keyboard.
Other artists are invited to collaborate with the banjo player incorporating him/me into their own projects. This gesture is also meant as an inversion of the power dynamic common in the music experience. Instead of the listener being subjugated here, they bend the performer to their will.
A variation of this project was installed at Public Works Administration gallery in the 50th St subway station in Times Square. (See install photos). In this variation, the avatar is placed within a 3D model of the gallery space - a further replication of the real into virtual space.
