In 2012, in the wake of Occupy Wall Street, I was a member of a small team who wanted to bring the larger critique of OWS to the institutions in our community - in this case the Whitney Biennial.
A website, whitney2012.org, was created as a spoof of the actual Whitney site but consisted primarily of a press release announcing that the museum had split with sponsor Deutsche Bank for reckless and fraudulent financial speculation and Sotheby’s for locking out unionized art handlers.
In the spirit of the Yes Men, a press release went out with Artnet tweeting it as actual news. While other media nearly fell for it, the publicity was sufficient to deliver our critique internationally.
